Helping children recover from trauma after Hurricane Harvey

The Garcia family purchased their first home in the year before Hurricane Harvey hit. Now the whole family is working hard to get back on their feet.

After Hurricane Harvey, the Garcia children were scared and uncertain about the future. Experts agree that trauma affects academic achievement, health, and behavior in school. Using funding from the Rebuild Texas Fund, Communities in Schools (CIS) provides case management services that focus on relief and recovery resource connection, helping students cope with trauma related to Hurricane Harvey, and financial assistance for basic needs.

Together, CIS and Rebuild Texas Fund are working to normalize the lives of the children, and helping them to recognize and cope with behaviors that can result from trauma.
